Why am I supporting this cause? My amazing bride of 24 years has led a fairly normal life until about 3 years ago. She was given a life altering diagnosis of Pancolitis, which is the most extreme version of Ulcerative Colitis. During treatment for this Autoimmune disease, she came across a random test performed by her GI Dr. for something called Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency. We had never heard about this genetic disorder before, but little did we know at the time how life changing it would be! She had been experiencing coughing fits and an inability to draw deep breaths for a while, but we didn't know why. After an incorrect diagnosis of asthma by one sketchy pulmonologist, we found an amazing Pulmonologist who had her take a lung function test and started her on treatments of Prolastin, and she ended up getting an access port placed in her chest to facilitate her weekly Prolastin Infusion and we have been getting these weekly infusions for about a year now.
